Comprehensive Dental Exams

Prevention Is Key

The best way to maintain a healthy mouth and to save money on dental care is to have routine comprehensive dental exams. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that adults and children have a dental exam approximately every six months. We're accepting new patients in San Diego! Whether you're new to the area or you're just looking for a new dentist, Mira Mesa Dental & Orthodontics is happy to provide routine care.

What is Done in a Routine Dental Exam?

During a dental checkup, we examine inside and outside your mouth to check for any signs of rising issues that can be fixed before they become problematic. We check to make sure that the tissues in your mouth are healthy and we look at your gums to check for periodontal disease. In addition to preventative checks, we also make sure to check your teeth to make sure that any crowns or fillings that you have are intact, and to make sure that you don't have any new cavities.

What About Dental X-Rays?

Generally speaking, you do not need x-rays taken at each visit. We will take a full set of x-rays at your first appointment with us, but recommend that full set be taken again every 3-5 years. We use digital x-rays for the lowest exposure possible and may take routine check-up x-rays if there is something that indicates the need.

If you have a history of extensive decay, or you have conditions that can lead to decay such as dry mouth (xerostomia), you may need x-rays more frequently than someone who hasn't had cavities or pre-existing conditions. It's okay if you don't know! We will make sure to recommend the best option for you.
