What Options for Dentures Do I Have?

There are two types of dentures -- complete and partial dentures. Complete dentures are used when all of the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. A partial denture not only fills in the spaces created by missing teeth, it prevents other teeth from shifting.

A complete denture can be either "conventional" or "immediate". The conventional type is a lengthier process, usually 4 - 6 weeks, and is made after the teeth have been removed & gum tissue has healed. During this time, you would go without teeth while the denture is being made.

Immediate dentures are made in advance and immediately placed after the teeth are removed, thus preventing any lapsed time without teeth. Your gum tissue will heal with the denture in place, so adjustments will have to be made once the tissues shrink and heal completely.

Dentures are very durable appliances made to last for many years. We will make sure to examine their fit and quality in your regular visits so that we can remake, repair, or readjust as needed due to normal wear.

Reasons Dentures may be the choice for you:

  • Complete Dentures: You may need complete dentures if you're missing all of your teeth in one or both arches
  • Partial Dentures: Partial dentures can be used to replace several teeth in an arch to help maintain the natural teeth you still have
  • If you want to enhance your smile and facial tissues
  • To improve your chewing, speech, and digestion

What Does Getting Dentures Involve?

Getting dentures is a process that requires several appointments, usually over a period of several weeks. Highly accurate impressions (molds) and measurements are taken and used to create your custom denture. Several appointments may be necessary where you try on the molds to ensure proper shape, color, and fit. At the final appointment, your dentist will precisely adjust and place the completed denture, ensuring a natural and comfortable fit.

In the first weeks after fitting a denture, you may experience increased saliva flow, and possible speech and chewing difficulty. But as your muscles and tissues get used to your new dentures, you'll find that your dentures will feel as natural as can be! You'll be given care instructions by your dentist as proper cleaning of the denture, good oral hygiene, and regular dental visits aid in the life of your new dentures.
